Wilhelm Dörr was a German SS-Oberscharführer who served as the deputy commander of the Kleinbodungen sub-camp during World War II and a guard at the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp. His acts throughout this terrible time in history resulted in his war crimes conviction and death.
Biography
Wilhelm Dörr was born on February 9, 1921, in Merenberg, Hesse. Raised in Emmerichenhain (Rennerod), Dörr worked as a farmhand before his involvement in Nazi organizations. He joined the Hitler Youth in 1932 and served until 1939. In December 1940, after being rejected for service by the Wehrmacht, Dörr volunteered for the Waffen-SS.
His military career took a turn when he fell seriously ill with rheumatism during combat engineer training in Dresden in October 1941, leading to a prolonged hospital stay. Dörr was transferred to the SS-Totenkopfverbände in the summer of 1942 once he recovered, and he worked as a guard in Sachsenhausen until December 1943.
Dörr was sent to the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp in January 1944, where he was given the title of Blockführer. Later on, he was appointed Hauptscharführer Franz Stofel’s deputy at the Kleinbodungen satellite camp. In this capacity, Dörr was in charge of managing about 620 camp detainees who were forced to work as slaves at the Mittelwerk weapons manufacturing complex, which produced Germany’s V-2 ballistic missiles.
As Allied forces advanced in April 1945, the evacuation of Mittelbau-Dora was ordered. Dörr, along with 45 other SS men, led a brutal death march of hundreds of Kleinbodungen inmates to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. During the journey, numerous summary executions of prisoners occurred, with SS men targeting those who attempted to escape or slowed the progress of the march.
Following the liberation of Bergen-Belsen by British troops, Dörr was arrested and indicted for his role in the atrocities committed during the death march from Mittelbau-Dora. He stood trial before a British military court as part of the Belsen Trial, along with 45 other alleged war criminals. Despite pleading not guilty, Dörr was convicted and sentenced to death.
