Katrin Dörre-Heinig, born Juana Katrin Dörre on October 6, 1961, in Leipzig, Germany. Track runner Dörre-Heinig started her athletic career in 1980 by winning the GDR title over 3000 meters. Her impressive performance of 2:45:54 hours at Karl-Marx-Stadt in 1982 indicated her promise as a marathon runner.

The triumph of Dörre-Heinig carried over to international contests. In 1985, she triumphed in both the IAAF World Cup Marathon in Hiroshima and the European Cup Marathon in Rome.
