Gordon Lightfoot was a Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist widely considered one of the most important and influential figures in Canadian music history. He was born on November 17, 1938, in Orillia, Ontario, Canada.
Early in the 1960s, Lightfoot started his musical career by playing in Toronto’s café folk scene. In 1966, he published his debut album, “Lightfoot!” It featured the Peter, Paul, and Mary classic “Early Morning Rain,” which became a number-one single.

Lightfoot has won various honors and recognition throughout the course of his career, including 16 Juno Awards, the Canadian version of the Grammy Awards, a Grammy nomination, and induction into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
The Order of Canada, one of the highest awards bestowed on Canadian citizens, has also been given to him.
Despite experiencing a stroke in 2006 and other health setbacks in recent years, Lightfoot keeps on performing and recording. His 21st studio album, “Solo,” which was published in 2020, includes acoustic versions of some of his most well-known songs reduced down.
Lightfoot passed away on May 1, 2023, of a natural cause. He was 84 years at the time of his death.
