Walter Althammer’s Biography
Walter Althammer, born March 12, 1928, in Augsburg, Germany, is a well-known figure in German politics and law. He is a member of the Christian Social Union (CSU) and has a successful legal profession.
Althammer grew up in a law enforcement-oriented home since his father was a police chief. After finishing his studies in Augsburg, he briefly fought as an infantry soldier in World War II before being captured as a POW.
Following his release, he attended the Marist School Brothers’ boarding school in Mindelheim before graduating from Marist College in 1948.
Althammer enrolled in law and political science programmes at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the University of Political Sciences in 1949.
He worked as a construction worker and roofer to help pay for his studies. In 1952, he passed his first state examination in law and later completed his legal training.
Althammer obtained his PhD in 1954 for his thesis on the concept of participation in the administrative process.
Throughout his career, Althammer handled a variety of legal and administrative responsibilities. He was a lawyer, an administrator for the Augsburg municipal government, and a teacher at the Bavarian Administrative School.
He was named a senior government councillor and government director in the Bavarian Ministry of Education and Culture. He also served on the board of directors of the German Compensation Bank, becoming its chairman from 1991 to 1993.
Althammer has been an active member of the Southeast European Society in Munich since 1965, and he was named honorary chairman in 2000.
He is a member of the Catholic student organisation K.St.V. Ludovicia Augsburg. After 25 years of marriage, he divorced in 1983 and now lives in Kรถnigswinter.
Althammer began his political career in 1952 when he joined the CSU and the Junge Union (JU).
He held several leadership posts within the JU and the CSU, including chairman of the Augsburg JU district association and second chairman of the CSU-affiliated Hanns Seidel Foundation.
He was initially elected to the German Bundestag in 1961, serving the Augsburg-Land constituency until his resignation in 1985.
During his service in parliament, Althammer chaired the audit committee, the Strauร wiretapping investigation committee, and the Foreign Cultural Policy subcommittee of the Foreign Affairs Committee.
Throughout his career, Althammer has received various awards, including the Bavarian Order of Merit, the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Large Cross of Merit with Star of the Federal Republic of Germany.
In addition to his political and legal achievements, Althammer wrote the book “Against Terror,” which was released in 1986.
