She started appearing frequently on the American television variety show “At Home,” which ran from 1944 to 1945 on the New York City station WCBW (now WCBS-TV). Her early TV roles set the stage for an accomplished and varied career.
Entering the Broadway theater scene in 1945, Cummings played Susan Peters in the critically acclaimed “Carousel,” demonstrating her aptitude and adaptability on stage.
Cummings adorned small and large screens with her presence during the late 1950s and early 1960s. During the 1958–59 season of the syndicated Western television series “Union Pacific,” she played Georgia, the proprietress of the Golden Nugget Saloon, in one of her notable appearances.
In addition, Cummings made her mark as a guest star on well-known television programs of the era, including “Perry Mason” and “Gunsmoke.” Her performances as Margaret Swaine in the 1959 episode “The Case of the Lame Canary” and Lois Fenton in the 1957 episode “The Case of the Fan Dancer’s Horse” of “Perry Mason” demonstrated her acting talent and adaptability.
In 1960, Cummings portrayed Marshall Dillon’s romantic interest Stella Carney in an episode of the renowned television Western “Gunsmoke.” She cemented her legacy in television history even further by playing Patty in the iconic “The Twilight Zone” episode “To Serve Man” from 1962.
