Following the death of her mother in 1897, Lil Dagover returned to Germany, where she received her education at boarding schools in Baden-Baden, Weimar, and Geneva, Switzerland.

She began her career as a theater actress throughout Europe at the age of 13, having been abandoned at birth. She wed the actor Fritz Gustav Josef Daghofer in 1907, and she went on to change her husband’s last name to “Dagover” on stage.

Career as an Actress in the Weimar Republic: Louis Held directed Little Dagover’s on-screen début in 1913. She became well-known in the German cinema business during her marriage to Fritz Daghofer, working with renowned filmmakers like Fritz Lang and Robert Wiene. Her big break came in Lang’s 1919 picture “Harakiri,” and she went on to star in Robert Wiene’s classic “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” (1920) after that.

In the 1920s, Dagover made a name for herself as a prominent actress in the Weimar Republic by appearing in movies directed by well-known figures like Carl Froelich and F. W. Murnau. She further cemented her reputation as a versatile performer in 1925 when she made her stage debut under the direction of Max Reinhardt.

Lil Dagover wed Georg Witt, a film producer, in 1926, and they worked together on several projects until he died in 1973. Dagover persevered in her acting career after World War II in West German films, despite the difficulties presented by the Nazi dictatorship. She received praise from all around the world for her performances in movies like “Gaspary’s Sons” (1948) and “Buddenbrooks” (1959).

In the 1960s and 1970s, Dagover transitioned to television, appearing in various West German television series and films. One of her notable performances was in the Academy Award-nominated film “The Pedestrian” (1973), directed by Maximilian Schell.
