Biography
Gudrun Elisabeth Brendel-Fischer was born on June 17, 1959, in Bayreuth. Brendel-Fischer continued education to become a specialized nutrition and design teacher after earning her high school diploma from Richard Wagner in 1975. She taught for two years as a trainee before starting her career in 1983 in the districts of Kronach, Bayreuth, and Kulmbach. She also led a course for specialized teachers from 1985 to 2007. She is the president of the Upper Franconia district organization for horticulture and land protection, having taken on this role since April 2011.4
Brendel-Fischer’s political career started in 1974 when she became a member of the Junge Union. She was also involved in the Federal Youth Council and German Rural Youth actively. She joined both the Women’s Union and the CSU in 1985.
Brendel-Fischer was elected to the Heinersreuth local council in 1990 and held that position until 2008. In the Bayreuth district, she has served as a district councilor since 2008. She took over as chairwoman of the CSU Bayreuth-Land district association in May 2015, replacing Hartmut Koschyk in that position.
In January 2007, Brendel-Fischer took Henry Schramm’s position in the Bavarian State Parliament. With 43.3% of the first vote, she won the direct mandate in the Kulmbach constituency during the 2008 state elections. Brendel-Fischer succeeded Ursula Mรคnnle as the new chair of the women’s working group of the CSU parliamentary group in the Bavarian State Parliament on January 14, 2009.
With 42.68 percent of the first ballots cast, she was directly elected to the state parliament in the Bayreuth district in the 2013 state election. Since the 17th election cycle, Brendel-Fischer has led the CSU parliamentary group as deputy leader and is a member of the Committee for Education and Culture.
Acknowledging her contributions, Brendel-Fischer was appointed as the volunteer representative of the Bavarian State Government on March 21, 2018, and later appointed as the Integration Commissioner of the Bavarian State Government by the Council of Ministers on November 27, 2018.
