Who Is Reiner Calmund?
Reinhold “Reiner” Calmund is a German retired football executive known for his role as the managing director of Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen.
Calmund, who was born on November 23, 1948, had a long and fruitful career as a football manager.
Calmund first pursued business administration coursework and a career as a commercial clerk. He played football in the Rhine-Erft region before moving on to train young players for several clubs.
He was hired by SC Brühl as an assistant coach in 1974, and during his time there, the squad had the chance to compete in the German Amateur Championship’s championship game.
In 1976, Calmund began working as an announcer and youth leader at TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
He advanced fast through the ranks, eventually joining the board in 1978. He managed the division for professional football beginning in 1988. Calmund was appointed managing director of Bayer Leverkusen in 1999.
Bayer Leverkusen achieved notable accomplishments under Calmund’s direction, including winning the German Cup in 1993 and the UEFA Cup in 1988.
The team also had four runners-up Bundesliga finishes and advanced to the 2002 Champions League final, earning the moniker “Vizekusen.”
Particularly in East Germany following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Calmund was renowned for his clever recruitment tactics.
Recognising the quality in the area, he signed players from East German clubs including Andreas Thom and Ulf Kirsten. During his tenure at Bayer Leverkusen, he also recruited worldwide superstars like Michael Ballack, Bernd Schuster, and Rudi Völler.
Calmund made his health-related retirement from his position as CEO of Bayer Leverkusen public in June 2004. He formally departed the team on June 30, 2004.
Later on, it was discovered that the reason he had been fired by the team was because of an erroneous financial payment made to a player’s agent. Calmund was subject to legal action, but the case was ultimately resolved by the payment of a fine.
Calmund undertook several endeavours after departing Bayer Leverkusen. He was voted to the Supervisory Board of Fortuna Düsseldorf, the host of the RTL television programme Big Boss, and a representative for disabled persons during the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
He also worked as a sports counsellor, had a video blog, and published a daily newspaper column.
Calmund is still working as a presenter, specialist, and author today. He is well-known both inside and beyond the football community because of his knowledge and distinctive personality, which also includes his distinct Rhineland dialect and prior weight difficulties.

Calmund was married several times and had kids. With his third wife, he adopted a two-year-old girl, and they have lived in Saarlouis since 2012.
Calmund has battled obesity his entire life and had stomach reduction surgery in January 2020. In 2021, he underwent skin removal after losing a substantial amount of weight successfully.
