Edgar Barth’s Biography

Wilfried Edgar Barth, a notable German Formula One and sports car racing driver, was born on January 26, 1917, in Herold. Barth began his racing career as a DKW motorcycle racer and eventually transitioned to BMW sports cars. After World War II, BMW’s East German facility became the Eisenacher Motorenwerk (EMW).

In the early 1950s, Barth raced in the East German Formula 2 Championship for the factory team. He won the championship twice: in 1952 and 1953. In 1953, he was allowed to race in three events in West Germany, including his debut in the Formula One World Championship.

Despite finishing fifth in the non-championship Eifelrennen, he withdrew from the Avusrennen and the German Grand Prix.

Barth moved to West Germany in 1957 and drove irregularly for the works Porsche team in Formula One until 1961. He also raced in the Formula 2 divisions at his home event in 1956 and 1957, but finished out of the points both times.

Barth finished sixth in the 1960 Italian Grand Prix while driving a Formula One vehicle. He was also entered in his hometown race in 1961, but he withdrew. He competed in the 1964 German Grand Prix for Rob Walker Racing, driving a Cooper-Climax, but did not finish.

Along with his Formula One career, Barth competed in a variety of other motorsport competitions.

In 1960, he competed in the 500-kilometer Nรผrburgring, driving a BMW 700 and finishing fifth. He had great success in the European Mountain Championships (Hillclimb), winning the title for Porsche in 1959, 1963, and 1964.

Barth also won the 1959 Targa Florio. In addition to his successes on the track, he competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans several times.

Unfortunately, Barth’s racing career was cut short when he was afflicted with cancer near the end of 1964. Tragically, he died from the condition on May 20, 1965.

His legacy, however, lives on through his son, Jรผrgen Barth, who became a Porsche engineer and won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1977.

Today, his racing helmet is on exhibit at the Prototyp Museum in Hamburg, Germany, as a reminder of his significant contributions to the sport.
