Erwin Bauer’s Biography
Erwin Erich Bauer, a German Formula One driver, was born on July 17, 1912, in Stuttgart. He had a brief but memorable racing career, racing a privately entered Veritas in his only World Championship Grand Prix.
Bauer’s most noteworthy event came in April 1953, when he co-drove a Porsche 356 Super 1500 with Hans Herrmann in the Mille Miglia, finishing 30th.
However, his achievement in the 1954 1000km Nรผrburgring race propelled him to even greater fame. Despite driving an underpowered Lotus, Bauer finished fourth, giving Lotus one of its first successes.
Bauer’s only Formula One World Championship race was in 1953, in the German Grand Prix on the Nรผrburgring. Out of thirty-four competitors, he finished 33rd, just ahead of fellow Veritas entrant Oswald Karch.
Unfortunately, his engine broke on the second lap of the race, terminating his Formula One debut.
Five years later, in 1958, Bauer died in an accident at the Nรผrburgring circuit. He was driving a 2-litre sports Ferrari and unintentionally continued racing past the checkered flag on what was supposed to be his slowing-down lap.
This resulted in a catastrophic crash and his untimely death.
