Michael Bartels was a German professional racing driver who was born on March 8, 1968. He had a remarkable career in motorsport, especially in the FIA GT Championship, where he won numerous championships.
Before his successful GT racing career, Bartels attempted to qualify for four Formula One races with Lotus in 1991.
Bartels began his racing career in karting, winning the German karting championship in 1985. He then progressed to Formula Ford 1600, winning the German championship in 1986.
Bartels competed in the German Formula Three Championship in 1988 and 1989 before moving on to the International Formula 3000 Series in 1990.
Bartels replaced Johnny Herbert at Lotus for four Formula One races in 1991. However, he was unable to qualify for all four events. He continued to compete in Formula 3000, placing fourth in the championship in 1992.
He subsequently switched to the DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft) in 1994, where he raced until the series was discontinued in 1996. Following that, Bartels competed in the Super Tourenwagen Cup for three years before the DTM returned in 2000.
In the early 2000s, Bartels had success in endurance racing. He won the 24 Hours of Nรผrburgring in 2000 with a factory Porsche 911 GT3, and again in 2001 with a Chrysler Viper GTS-R. He also won the Spa 24 Hours three times: in 2005, 2006, and 2008.
Bartels competed in the FIA GT Championship beginning in 2004 with Konrad Motorsport, driving a Saleen S7R. However, for the 2005 season, he established his team, Bartels Motor & Sport, and raced a Maserati MC12 under the Vitaphone Racing name.
His original alliance with Timo Scheider, but later with Andrea Bertolini, helped him win the championship in 2006, 2008, and 2009.
Following the FIA GT Championship, Bartels competed in the V8Star Series’ final year in 2003 before moving on to the Blancpain GT Series, formerly known as the GT1 World Championship, where he raced for BMW Team Vita4One in a BMW Z4 GT3.
Bartels enjoyed great success in this series, coming in third in the championship in 2012.
