Irama’s Biography
Filippo Maria Fanti, better known by his stage name Irama, is an Italian singer, rapper, and songwriter.
He was born in Carrara, Italy, on December 20, 1995. Irama rose to prominence in 2018 after winning the 17th edition of the talent programme Amici di Maria De Filippi. Since then, he’s gone on to become one of Italy’s most popular performers, selling over two million albums and scoring multiple chart-topping hits.
Irama’s musical journey began when she was a child. Through the works of Italian artists Francesco Guccini and Fabrizio De André, he became interested in music. He became interested in hip-hop as he grew older. Irama chose his stage name by anagramming his second name, Maria, to create a pseudonym that signifies “rhythm” in Malay.
Irama entered the Sanremo Giovani song contest in 2015 with his song “Cosa resterà,” which he co-wrote with Giulio Nenna. His performance earned him a position in the Sanremo Music Festival’s New Proposal category.
Despite reaching the 100th spot on the Italian Singles Charts, the song laid the groundwork for Irama’s debut studio album, also titled Irama, which was released on February 12, 2016. The album debuted at number 51 on the FIMI Chart. His second song, “Tornerai da me,” was released on May 27, 2015, and went gold.
Despite his initial success, Irama later left Warner Music Italy due to what he saw as insufficient marketing.
In 2016, he opted to compete on the seventeenth episode of the talent programme Amici di Maria De Filippi in pursuit of a record relaunch. After winning the competition, he re-signed with Warner Records. “Un giorno in più,” his first single since rejoining the label, debuted at number 24 on the FIMI chart and was certified gold.
Irama’s breakthrough came with the publication of his single “Nera” in June 2017. The song peaked at number two on the Top Singles Chart and sold more than 150,000 copies. He then released the EP Plume, which topped the FIMI Album chart and was certified double platinum for sales of over 100,000 copies. Both “Nera” and “Plume” finished high on the Italian year-end charts.
Irama’s success continued in October 2018 with the release of his second studio album, Giovani. The album debuted at number one on the FIMI Albums Chart and was certified platinum. It featured the smash tune “Bella e rovinata,” which peaked at number twenty-one on the Top Singles Chart.
Irama returned to the Sanremo Music Festival in 2019 with the song “La ragazza con il cuore di latta,” which reached number three on the FIMI chart and sold over 100,000 copies.
Irama’s fourth studio album, Crepe, was released in 2020, and it was one of the defining milestones in his career. “Mediterranea,” the lead song, topped the charts, giving him his first number one hit in Italy. Both the single and the album were huge successes, charting high at the end of the year.
Irama returned to the Sanremo Music Festival in 2021 with the song “La genesi del tuo colore.” Despite the fact that he was unable to play live owing to COVID-19 limitations, his rehearsal footage thrilled the judges, propelling him to fifth place. Later, the song was declared gold. In 2022, he returned to the Sanremo stage with the song “Ovunque Sarai” and finished fourth.
With the release of his third studio album, “Il giorno in cui ho smesso di pensare,” in 2022, Irama’s catalogue increased even further. The album debuted at the top of the charts, cementing his place as one of Italy’s most popular musicians.
