Tim Bendzko is a German singer-songwriter who achieved nationwide recognition with his song “Nur noch kurz die Welt retten.”
He was born on April 9, 1985, and grew up in Berlin’s Köpenick district. Bendzko attended a sports gymnasium as a teenager and played football for the FC Union Berlin club up to the “B” age level.
At the age of 11 or 12, he began taking guitar lessons, which launched his musical career. He wrote his first songs when he was 16 years old. Bendzko studied Protestant Theology and non-Christian faiths at the Free University of Berlin after finishing his Abitur.
He did not, however, complete his studies after five semesters. He then worked as a car auctioneer for a short time.
Bendzko competed in the talent competition Söhne gesucht of Söhne Mannheims in 2009 and won. As a result, he was able to perform in front of 20,000 people at the Berlin Waldbühne, one of Europe’s largest concert venues.
Following his success, he signed a recording contract with Sony Music and opened for Silly on their 2010 tour.
On June 17, 2011, he released his debut album, “Wenn Worte meine Sprache wären,” which contained the hit tune “Nur noch kurz die Welt retten.”
The album peaked at number four in Germany, and the single peaked at number two. It was certified 3 Gold in Germany, Platinum in Switzerland, and Gold in Austria.
Hagen Decker directed the music video for the tune in Los Angeles. The album sold over 500,000 copies in Germany alone, earning it 5 Gold, Platinum in Switzerland, and Gold in Austria.
During Elton John’s tour in Germany, Bendzko received the opportunity to perform as the opening act. He also opened for Joe Cocker on his Hard Knocks tour.
He won the Bundesvision Song Contest with the title tune from his album “Wenn Worte meine Sprache wären” in 2011. Later that year, he got the Bambi award for best newcomer.
Aside from his successful singing career, Bendzko was one of three coaches on the first season of The Voice Kids in Germany, which aired in 2013.
