Walter Eckhardt was a German politician who worked for the All-German Bloc/League of Expellees and Deprived Rights (GB/BHE) and later the Christian Social Union of Bavaria (CSU).

Walter Eckhardt’s Biography

Walter Eckhardt was born March 23, 1906, in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, Germany. Before continuing his studies, he went to preschool and high school in Bad Homburg.

Eckhardt studied law and philosophy at three universities: Johann Wolfgang Goethe in Frankfurt am Main, Christian Albrechts in Kiel, and Philipps in Marburg, from 1924 to 1928.

During his time at Marburg, Eckhardt joined the Jungstahlhelm and the Corps Teutonia. After earning his doctorate in law from Marburg, he worked as a judicial trainee and assistant judge at the district court in Frankfurt/Main.

Eckhardt joined the Reich Finance Administration in 1931 and served in various positions. In 1933, he joined the NSDAP, and then the SA.

He continued to work in numerous tax departments before joining the Reich Finance Ministry in 1939. He advanced to the rank of ministerial councillor until 1944.

After serving in the military and being kept in British custody, Eckhardt began working as an in-house lawyer in Bielefeld in 1948. He later relocated to Munich in 1949 to work as a lawyer and tax expert.

However, he encountered difficulties during the denazification process when the Bavarian State Office for Restitution requested that proceedings against him be resumed.

Eckhardt was highly involved in politics, serving as a member of the Bavarian State Parliament from 1950 until 1954. He also served in the German Bundestag from 1953 to 1957 and from 1964 to 1969.

He was previously a GB/BHE party member but left in 1955 to join the CDU/CSU group. Eckhardt eventually joined the CSU in 1956.

In addition to his political career, Eckhardt began practising tax law in Bonn in 1955.

He was also recognised by the Contemporary History Study Centre in Ingolstadt, which named the Dr Walter Eckhardt Honorary Gift for contemporary history study in his honour. Walter Eckhardt died on January 1, 1994, in Feldafing, Germany.
