Torriani was born in St. Moritz and was raised by Lombard ancestors. He began performing as a vocalist while still in his early years of cooking and pastry chef studies after demonstrating an aptitude for singing at a young age.

After publishing cookbooks and starting his own restaurant in Basel, Torriani’s big break came in 1945 when he placed first in a talent contest.
