Trude Berliner is still remembered as a significant personality in German and Hollywood film history, despite encountering numerous obstacles in both her personal and professional lives.
Trude Berliner’s Biography
German actress Trude Berliner was born in Berlin, Germany, on February 28, 1903. In Berlin, she began her career as a cabaret artist before making her screen debut in the silent picture “Krieg im Frieden” in 1925.
Berliner’s career took off in 1929 when she starred in “Dich hab ich geliebt,” which became the first German talkie to be released in the United States, despite a four-year lapse between her first and second films.
Berliner acted in several well-known German films of the 1930s, including “Masken,” “The Invisible Front,” and “Kaiserwalzer.” But when she was compelled to leave Germany in 1933 because of her Jewish origin and the development of the Nazi Party, her career took a drastic turn.
In 1939, she left France for the first time and moved to the United States.
Berliner failed to maintain her lucrative film career in Hollywood, landing just supporting parts in four films. When she starred as a female gambler at Rick’s Café in the classic movie “Casablanca,” in 1942, she made her debut. Furthermore, she starred in a few television shows and films, including “Reunion in France” and “The Strange Death of Adolf Hitler.”
Berliner starred with her longtime co-star S.Z. Sakall in her final American motion picture, “The Dolly Sisters” (1945). She stopped performing after that and didn’t return to the big screen until 1955, when she starred in her last movie, “Before God and Man.”
Berliner lived a quiet life in California until her death on February 26, 1977, in San Diego, just shy of her 74th birthday.
