Austrian-British actress Elisabeth Bergner is renowned for her accomplished career in theatre and cinema. She was raised in a secular Jewish household and was born on August 22, 1897, in Drohobych, Austro-Hungarian Empire (modern-day Ukraine).
Bergner started performing on stage when she was 14 years old, and her skill was quickly noticed. She travelled with a Shakespearean company through Austria and Germany, acting as Wilhelm Lehmbruck’s model for his sculptures.
Bergner debuted in a motion picture in 1923 with “Der Evangelimann.” She relocated to London in 1933 to marry director Paul Czinner as Nazism grew in popularity.
After becoming a naturalised British national in 1938, she carried on with her lucrative theatrical career in London, playing leading roles in productions including “The Boy David” and “Escape Me Never.”
Her performance in the movie “Escape Me Never” got her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Throughout her career, Bergner played several well-known characters, such as Rosalind in the “As You Like It” movie and Gemma Jones in “Escape Me Never.” Her performance in “The Two Mrs. Carrolls” on Broadway earned her the Drama League’s Distinguished Performance Medal in 1943.
Later in life, Bergner made a brief return to Germany, where she carried on with her stage and film acting career. She was the recipient of many accolades, including Austria’s 1980 Cross of Merit for Science and Art. At the age of 88, she passed away in London on May 12, 1986.
