Career
Harwell’s career began in the rap scene as a member of the group F.O.S. (Freedom of Speech). But when he heard Dr. Dre’s landmark 1992 album “The Chronic,” his creative career abruptly changed. He noticed that the musical scene was shifting, and his focus switched from rap to rock.
Smash Mouth was created in 1994 by Greg Camp. The band, with Paul De Lisle, Kevin Coleman, and Harwell, was extremely successful.
The song that made them famous was “All-Star,” which went on to become a global success in 1999. Following its inclusion in the popular 2001 film “Shrek,” the song experienced a rebirth and reached the US top 10. Due to its catchy tune and lyrics, “All-Star” became an anthem for a generation.

Even more was possible with Harwell. “Beside Myself” and “Everything Just Crazy,” two of his songs, were used in the 2013 South Korean-Chinese animated film “Pororo, The Racing Adventure.”
Challenges
Throughout his career, Harwell faced several challenges. He needed emergency care after passing out on stage in Urbana, Illinois, in 2016 while on tour with Smash Mouth. His comrades carried on without him, demonstrating their tenacity and dedication to their work.
Smash Mouth was the headline act at the contentious August 2020 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota during the COVID-19 pandemic. Harwell made news with his passionate declaration of being “human once again,” but the incident went on to become known as a superspreading occurrence.
At a beer and wine celebration in October 2021, Harwell made vulgar gestures, seemed inebriated, and announced his retirement owing to unresolved health difficulties. These activities took a frightening turn.
