Stefan Messerer is a German diplomat currently serving as the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Cambodia.
Stefan Messerer’s Biography
German diplomat Stefan Messerer was born in Munich in 1968 and is the Federal Republic of Germany’s current ambassador to Cambodia. As of 2022, he has been leading the embassy in Phnom Penh.
Following his graduation from Max-Mannheimer-Gymnasium Grafing in 1987, Messerer served in the armed forces. After that, he studied from 1988 to 1991 at the Federal University of Applied Sciences for Foreign Affairs in Bonn-Ippendorf and Bad Münstereifel in preparation for a career in the senior foreign service.
He served as an intern at the embassy in Dakar, Senegal, as part of his preparation duty.
In 1991, Messerer started working abroad when he was hired as a senior clerk at the consulate general in Melbourne, Australia, and the embassies in Bucharest, Romania, and Sanaa, Yemen.
From 2001 to 2003, he fulfilled the requirements for advanced service, and from 2002 to 2006, he led the legal and consular affairs division at the Polish Embassy in Warsaw. After that, he worked as a protocol officer at the Berlin headquarters of the Foreign Office.
Messerer has had several posts over his career, including press officer at the US Embassy in Washington, D.C., from 2012 to 2015, and permanent representative of the Chief of the Embassy in Kampala, Uganda, from 2009 to 2012.
From 2016 to 2019, he worked at the Foreign Office in the protocol department, first as a consultant and then as the deputy head and finally as the department head.
Deputy head of the organisational staff for the German EU Council Presidency 2020 and the German presidencies in 2021–2022, including the G7, Messerer held dual positions from 2018 to 2022.
Ultimately, he became the head of the Phnom Penh Embassy when he was named Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Cambodia in 2022. Messerer has two kids and is married.
