German diplomat Carsten Hölscher was born in Washington, DC, on January 21, 1962, and is the Federal Republic of Germany’s current ambassador to Burundi. He supports German interests in the nation as the head of the German Embassy in Bujumbura.
Hölscher attended Colégio Visconde de Porto Seguro in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he completed his general higher education entry exam in 1980. From 1980 to 1988, he studied law at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich.
After completing his legal traineeship, he started working at the Federal Foreign Office’s training and further education centre in Bonn-Ippendorf from 1989 to 1990 as a higher foreign service candidate.
In the German Embassy in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Hölscher received his first overseas posting, which marked the start of his foreign service career.
After thereafter, he worked at several diplomatic posts, including New Delhi, India, and Toronto, Canada, where he held the position of Deputy Consul General. He was employed at the Federal Foreign Office from 2003 to 2007 when he was promoted to deputy chief of the Southern Europe Division.
Along with these positions, he worked at the German embassies in Paris, France, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Hölscher worked for the Federal Foreign Office from 2013 to 2019, first in the Protocol Department and later in the Department for International Treaties, as the deputy leader of a department.
Hölscher began serving as Burundi’s Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador in August 2023. Representing his country in the nation of East Africa, he continues to promote diplomatic relations between Germany and Burundi with his wealth of knowledge and diplomatic acumen.
