Romy Schneider was a German-French actress who began her acting career in the German Heimatfilm genre at a time when she was just fifteen years old. Romy Schneider was born on September 23, 1938, and her parents were actors Magda Schneider and Wolf Albach-Retty.
She was born in Vienna six months after the Anschluss of Austria into the German Reich. Romy Schneider’s mother was German whereas her father was Austrian; Rosa Albach-Retty, her paternal grandmother was also an actress.
Romy Schneider grew up with her Wolf-Dieter (born 1941) at the house of her grandparents Franz Xaver and Maria Schneider on the country estate Mariengrund and it is interesting to note that she was taken to her grandparents just four weeks after her birth.
Due to the fact that her parents were busy and involved in the acting fraternity, they were not present most of the time and later they divorced. Following the divorce, Romy Schneider and her brother Wolf-Dieter were catered for by Magda.
Concerning education, Romy Schneider attended the elementary school of Schönau and had further studies at the girls’ boarding school at Castle Goldenstein.
It was a private secondary school of the Augustinian Canonesses of the Congregation of Notre Dame in Elsbethen near Salzburg. While in school, Romy Schneider realized she had passion for acting and made time to be on stage.
It would be recounted that between 1955 and 1957, Romy Schneider played the lead role in the Austrian Sissi trilogy as Empress Elisabeth of Austria. Later on, she relocated to France. While in France, she had the opportunity to feature in films directed by notable directors around that time.
Romy Schneider’s Death
Following the death of David Christopher, Romy Schneider took to excessive drinking of alcohol. However, Laurent Pétin and Claude Pétin believed that Romy Schneider’s death was a natural death and not attributable to the excessive drinking of alcohol.
Romy Schneider was found lifeless on May 29, 1982, in her apartment in Paris. She was reported to have died due to cardiac arrest as a result of a weakened heart caused by a kidney operation.
Personal Details
Romy Schneider got married to German director and actor Harry Meyen in July 1966 after she broke up with Delon.
Romy Schneider and Harry Meyen later divorced but they had a son called David Christopher. The son of Romy Schneider and Harry Meyen unfortunately died when he was just 14 years old.
Romy Schneider was quite involved in a number of relationships and dated the likes of Oswalt Kolle, actor Bruno Ganz, Jean-Louis and Jacques Dutronc.
Later in 1975, she got married to Daniel Biasini who was her private secretary but they divorced six years later. Romy Schneider and Daniel Biasini had a daughter called, Sarah.
