Peter Frankenfeld was a well-known German comedian, radio host, and television personality. He was born Willi Julius August Frankenfeldt in Berlin on May 31, 1913.
Before entering the radio industry in 1948, Frankenfeld worked as a translator for the US military government after World War II. He invented quiz shows on West German radio and television during this period, and he soon became the most well-known programme host and performer in the country.
Frankenfeld’s classic sketches, which epitomised his comic genius, are what people most remember about him. Among the famous sketches is “Der Überzieher,” which tells the story of a man who is always fighting to keep his overcoat safe when eating at a restaurant.
“Die Bürgschaft” (“The Hostage”) is another well-loved sketch in which Frankenfeld hilariously tries to recite the well-known poem by Friedrich Schiller, frequently with amusing results.
He also thrilled audiences with his portrayal of “Die Wetterkarte” (“The Weather Chart”), where he expertly mimicked a variety of German dialects.
While visiting Blackpool in 1962, Frankenfeld and director Heinz Dunkhase happened upon the comedic piece Dinner for One. Inspired by its humorous possibilities, they recorded it on July 8, 1963, and included it in Frankenfeld’s live show.
The sketch became hugely successful and was repeated on German television on a sporadic basis until it was given a permanent place on New Year’s Eve in 1972.
In addition to his comic pursuits, Frankenfeld was married to renowned vocalist Lonny Kellner.
