Maxi Jazz Biography
Maxwell Fraser, better known by his stage name Maxi Jazz, was a British musician, rapper, singer, songwriter, and DJ.
He was born in Brixton, south London, on June 14, 1957. When Jazz discovered hip hop and started DJing in the early 1980s, his musical career officially began. He established The Soul Food Café System and performed as a DJ on many illicit radio stations.
Tam Tam Records signed Jazz’s band, The Soul Food Café Band, and they issued three EPs in 1989. They performed on tour as the opening act for performers including Jamiroquai, Soul II Soul, and Galliano.
Maxi Jazz and the Soul Food Cafe collaborated with Revco Records to record and publish the album “Original Groovejuice Vol.1” in 1996.
Jazz worked on the Invaders of the Heart album with Jah Wobble after the band broke up, and she also performed with the Wobble Collective.
Jazz, Jamie Catto, and Sister Bliss founded the electronic band Faithless in 1995 after meeting Rollo Armstrong in a studio.
Despite having strong Soka Gakkai Buddhist convictions, Jazz’s lyrics covered a variety of topics, from social challenges to personal ones. Faithless rose to fame thanks to songs like “Insomnia” and “God Is a DJ.” Jazz has also worked with musicians like Tisto and Robbie Williams.
Jazz had a penchant for motorsports in addition to his singing profession. He established Maxi Jazz Racing in 2000 and competed in a number of racing competitions, such as the Porsche Carrera Cup GB.
Jazz was an active Buddhist who lived in West Norwood, London, and supported the Burma Campaign UK. Additionally, he supported Crystal Palace F.C. Joe Simpson, a painter, painted his likeness in 2011; it was displayed at the Royal Albert Hall.
Maxi Jazz, age 65, died quietly while sleeping on December 23, 2022. His bandmates, admirers, and colleagues paid tribute to him, complimenting his brilliance, sage advice, and kind demeanour. The day of his funeral was January 30, 2023.
