Martin Kotthaus’s Biography
German diplomat Martin Kotthaus was born in Burscheid, Germany, on May 13, 1962. He has been the German Ambassador to Belgium since September 2018. Kotthaus has a distinguished career in the German government, holding several positions.
After graduating from Velbert High School in 1981, Kotthaus served in the military in a basic capacity. Subsequently, he studied law in Mรผnster and Geneva, passing the first state exam at the Higher Regional Court in Hamm in 1989 to earn his degree.
In 1992, after serving as a law clerk at Dรผsseldorf’s Higher Regional Court, he passed the second state exam. Kotthaus completed his studies at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Medford/Somerville, Massachusetts, USA, in 1996 and 1997.
In terms of his professional background, Kotthaus started working in the “European Policy” division of the State Chancellery of Brandenburg in Potsdam in 1993.
He started working for the Foreign Office the next year. Kotthaus was named Permanent Representative in 1994 and posted to the Embassy in Luanda, Angola. In 1997, following his time at the Fletcher School, he was appointed Press Officer at the Embassy located in Washington, D.C.
In 1999, Kotthaus moved to Hamburg to work for the publishing business Gruner + Jahr, where he became Executive Vice President of Investor Relations and Corporate Communications in 2000. But he did return to the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin in 2003, this time as the head of the unit known as “Image of Germany Abroad.”
Later, from 2006 to 2011, he was Head of Press at the Federal Republic of Germany’s Permanent Representation to the European Union in Brussels.
Kotthaus served as Minister Wolfgang Schรคuble’s spokesperson and head of communications at the Federal Ministry of Finance in Berlin from 2011 to 2014.
Kotthaus under the direction of Federal Foreign Ministers Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Sigmar Gabriel, and Heiko Maas, he assumed responsibility as Head of the European Department at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin, acting as Ministerial Director from 2014 to 2018.
Martin Kotthaus was named Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Kingdom of Belgium in September 2018 in appreciation of his experience and knowledge; he presently resides in Brussels. Kotthaus has two kids and is married.
