On June 13, 1980, Markus Winkelhock was born in Stuttgart, Germany. Because both his father, Manfred Winkelhock, and his uncle, Joachim Winkelhock, drove Formula One cars in the 1980s, Winkelhock comes from a family with a long history of racing.
Winkelhock started his racing career in several junior formulas, winning multiple races in Formula Kรถnig, German Formula Renault, and Formula Renault Eurocup.
After that, he switched to the German Formula 3 Championship, where he had good seasons and placed among the top five competitors.
Winkelhock briefly switched to touring car racing in the DTM series in 2005, but he had trouble earning points. In 2006, he went back to single-seater racing with the Midland F1 team, which subsequently changed its name to Spyker F1, as a test and reserve driver.
When he was called up for the European Grand Prix in 2007, he made his Formula One debut, taking Christijan Albers’ seat. He was last on the starting grid; however, he led the race for a number of laps before retiring with a technical issue.
Following his brief stint in Formula One, Winkelhock shifted his attention to sports car racing. Along with colleague Marc Basseng, he took home the 2012 FIA GT1 World Championship.
