Joachim Winkelhock, the younger brother of the late Manfred Winkelhock, hails from a family of race car drivers. Both Markus Winkelhock, Manfred’s son, and his younger brother Thomas Winkelhock are race car drivers.
After his brother passed away in 1985, Winkelhock’s racing career was put on hold. It had started in the 1980s. When he returned to racing in 1988, he was 28 years old and had already won the European Cup and the German Formula Three Championship.
Winkelhock made seven attempts to pre-qualify in Formula One while driving for the tiny AGS team in 1989. After that, he turned his attention to touring car racing and enrolled in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft with BMW Motorsport.
He won the British Touring Car Championship in 1993 and the 24 Hours of Nรผrburgring in 1990 and 1991 with a BMW M3 entered by Schnitzer Motorsport, among other noteworthy achievements.
Throughout the 1990s, Winkelhock maintained his winning ways in touring car racing, taking home titles in the 1994 Asia Pacific Touring Car Championship, the 1995 German Supertouring Championship, the 1995 Spa 24 Hours, and the Guia touring car races held in conjunction with the Macau Grand Prix in 1994 and 1998.
His final victory for BMW was in the 1999 24 Hours of Le Mans, which he won while piloting the Schnitzer Motorsport-run BMW V12 LMR prototype.
At age 43, Winkelhock announced his retirement from motor racing in 2003. He currently oversees the Waiblingen truck crane and towing company owned by his family. A unique edition of the BMW M5 has been developed in honour of his racing career.
