Biography

French lawyer and politician Marion Anne Perrine “Marine” Le Pen was born on August 5, 1968. She is most renowned for leading the country’s far-right National Rally (RN) party. In recent decades, Le Pen has emerged as a key player in French politics, promoting a variety of protectionist, anti-immigration, and nationalist measures.

Marine’s political career started with a succession of local and regional positions, establishing her influence in French politics: she was a member of the European Parliament (2004–2017), a municipal councillor of Hénin-Beaumont (2008–2011), and a regional councillor of Nord-Pas-de-Calais (1998–2004), ÃŽle-de-France (2004–2010), and Hauts-de-France (2015–2021).

Marine succeeded her father as the National Front’s president in 2011 after winning a landslide victory in the race for leadership with 67.6% of the vote. Under her leadership, the party’s image was moderated through the “de-demonization” campaign, which removed members accused of racism, antisemitism, and other controversial views and softened the party’s position on certain social issues, including the death penalty and same-sex partnerships, while keeping its hardline stance on immigration, national identity, and European Union sovereignty.

She has run for the French presidency three times: in 2012, 2017, and 2022. In 2012, she secured 17.9% of the vote in the first round of the election, finishing third behind François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy. Despite not making it to the second round, her strong showing demonstrated the growing influence of the far-right in French politics.

Marine has been well-known during her career on the international front. She was listed as one of the 100 most important persons in the world by Time magazine in 2011 and 2015. She was listed by Politico in 2016 as the second most important member of the European Parliament, after then-President Martin Schulz. According to a Verian-Epoka survey done for Le Figaro Magazine in January 2024, Le Pen achieved a new political high and became the country’s most popular politician for the first time.

In March 2025, Le Pen, along with several other members of the European Parliament and assistants, was convicted of embezzling European Parliament funds for personal use. The court sentenced her to four years in prison and a five-year ban from holding political office, which disqualified her from the 2027 presidential election. She was also fined €100,000 as part of the ruling.
