Biography
Frauke Petry is a former German politician and chemist who was born on June 1 1975, in Dresden, East Germany. She was born to an engineer and a chemist and was raised in Schwarzheide, Brandenburg, until her family relocated to Bergkamen, Westphalia, following the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
She studied chemistry at the University of Reading in England, where she graduated in 1998. With the Studienstiftung scholarship, she went on to the University of Göttingen, where she obtained her PhD in 2004. Before going into politics, Petry was an entrepreneur.
In 2013, Petry became involved in politics as a founding member of the Alternative for Germany. In a short period, she became the chairperson of AfD Saxony and one of the three party spokespersons. In July 2015, she overthrew party founder Bernd Lucke in an internal power struggle to become one of two federal spokespersons, greatly increasing her prominence.
Notwithstanding her achievements, Petry grew more critical of the AfD’s leadership, calling it “anarchical” and incapable of offering a “credible platform.” She shocked many by declaring she would not be joining the AfD parliamentary group after the 2017 federal election.
To appeal to those fed up with the increasingly radical AfD and Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Petry established The Blue Party in September 2017 as a conservative alternative.
However, in regional elections in Thuringia and Saxony, the Blue Party received less than 0.5% of the vote, indicating that they were unable to establish traction. By the end of 2019, Petry acknowledged that the Blue Party had been rejected by the electorate and declared its dissolution.
Petry was elected to the Saxon State Parliament after the 2014 state election and received a direct mandate for the AfD in the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains seat during the 2017 federal election. After quitting AfD, she continued as an independent MP until her resignation from the Bundestag at the conclusion of its 19th parliamentary year in 2021.
