Luzia Tschirky was born in 1990 and she is a Swiss television journalist. She is known to report from Russia and post-Soviet countries for Swiss Radio and Television (SRF). She is fluent in English, Russian and German. It must be noted that Luzia Tschirky was voted Swiss “Journalist of the Year” in the year 2021.
Luzia Tschirky made her initial attempts at journalism at the Sargans cantonal school. It is worth noting that Luzia Tschirky studied political science as a bachelor’s degree at the University of Zurich from 2010 to 2015.
When Luzia Tschirky was a teenager, she was in Moscow as a delegate with respect to the European Youth Press. She was a volunteer and served on the board of “Young Journalists Switzerland”. Subsequently, she founded the Youth Media Days Switzerland” in 2011.
She was the leader of the Youth Media Days Switzerland” for about three years. She served on the Swiss editorial team of 3Sat in 2012 and in 2014, she commenced and initiated the “ Media Women Switzerland ” project.
Luzia Tschirky also served in the Moscow office of “ Spiegel ” and the Russian-language editorial team of the American government-funded “ Radio Free Europe ” in Prague. She also had internships and freelance work at SRF. Her presence was felt on programs such as “ Rundschau ” and “ Arena ”.
Luzia Tschirky also worked as a freelance reporter for “ 10vor10 ” as SRF’s “Rundschau” during the Maidan protests in Kiev in 2013.
She completed SRF’s tri-media journalism stage in March 2017 and in 2019, Luzia Tschirky became the first woman to take over as a correspondent for Russia and the former USSR from Christof Franzen in Moscow. She was arrested in Minsk by Belarusian police when she was travelling in the city with a friend and her husband on January 31, 2021, and this was six months after the controversial presidential election in Belarus.
She was living in Kiev when the Russian attack on Ukraine began.
