Jan Smit’s Biography

Jan Smit born 31 December 1985 is a Dutch singer, television host, and actor. Smit primarily sings songs in Dutch, in a style known as palingsound. In addition to his solo career, Smit joined the schlager trio KLUBBB3 in 2015 and The Toppers in 2017.

He has worked as a TV host on shows such as Beste Zangers (Best Singers in the Netherlands) and Sterren Muziekfeest op het Plein (Music Festival on the Square).

Smit has been an ambassador for SOS Children’s Villages since 1999, and he also serves on the board of the football club FC Volendam.

Jan Smit began his musical career in Volendam with the boys’ choir De Zangertjes van Volendam.

At the age of 10, he was discovered when the famous Dutch band BZN requested him to perform a duet with one of its main singers, Carola Smit.

The success of their song Mama prompted Smit to record a solo single titled Ik Zing Dit Lied Voor Jou Alleen (I sing this song just for you). This song reached number one in the Dutch charts, making Smit the youngest artist to do so.

Following his early success, Smit went on to release successful songs such as Pappie and Waar Blijf Je Nou (Daddy, Where Are You Now), and he found success not only in the Netherlands but also in Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy, and France.

He became one of the best-selling Dutch acts outside of the Netherlands, releasing eleven records in German. Smit, BZN, and their producers were awarded the Exportprijs in 2001 for being the best-selling Dutch musicians overseas.

Smit changed his stage name from Jantje Smit to Jan Smit in 2005 and began filming his reality show Gewoon Jan Smit (Just Jan Smit), which followed his daily life. In the same year, the show earned the Gouden Televizier Ring (Golden Televizier Ring).

Jan Smit then shifted his concentration to being a presenter, co-hosting Muziekfeest op het Plein (Music Festival on the Square) with Belle Pรฉrez.
