Biography

Georg Brauchle was born on August 29, 1915, in Munich. Georg Brauchle Sr., a skilled saddler in Munich, was the father of Georg Brauchle. He began attending the Maximiliansgymnasium in Munich in 1926 and finished his Abitur there in 1935, where he studied with prominent people like Johanna Lenz and Franz Josef StrauรŸ.

During his two terms as Munich’s second mayor, Brauchle made major contributions to the city’s growth, especially in the run-up to the Summer Olympics in 1972. Brauchle was a major proponent of Munich’s bid to host the Olympics and was influential in determining the city’s infrastructure and urban planning policies. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) chose Munich as the host city in April 1966 thanks in large part to his efforts.

As a key part of Munich’s Olympic planning strategy, Brauchle promoted an ambitious transport plan that included expedited building of the S-Bahn and U-Bahn networks.

Tragically, Georg Brauchle passed away on April 7, 1968, as a result of an accident.

The Georg-Brauchle-Ring was established in 1971 as a portion of Munich’s Middle Ring that was close to the Olympic site. The Georg-Brauchle-Ring metro station was also named after him and opened in 2003 to honor his memory.
