Who Was Dieter Georgi?
Dieter Georgi was a respected German-American Protestant theologian born on June 6, 1929 in Mittelsömmern. He was also a professor who lectured at Harvard Divinity School, San Anselmo Theological Seminary, etc.
Georgi is actually biracial. He was born to an American mother and a German father who was a pastor. So it was quite normal when he decided to follow the path he followed considering the family he was born into.
He attended the humanistic high school in Frankfurt am Main and in Dresden from 1939 to 1947. From there, he proceeded to the University of Mainz to study Protestant theology.
Within a period of six years, Georgi studied Protestant theology at Heidelberg University, University of Marburg, University of Edinburgh, University of Göttingen and the University of Mainz.
He wrote and passed his first theological examination in the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau 1953 and wrote the second in 1955.
His teaching work started in 1954 where he taught for the New Testament in Heidelberg. Since then, he went on to become a lecturer and then a professor.
He worked as a professor of theology at the Harvard Divinity School (1969 to 1984), the Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe University (1987 to 1989) and San Anselmo Theological Seminary. Even in his retirement, Georgi still offered himself to teach at the Union Theological Seminary in Dasmarinas, Philippines as a visiting professor.
As a New Testament scholar and professor, Georgi published a number of articles and books.
Interestingly, he fell in love with another theologian, Barbara and together formed a powerful partnership as husband and wife for close to fifty years until he died in 2005. His marriage to Barbara Georgi produced five children.
By the time he died in 2005, his five children, Asmus, Martin, Karsten, Eckhard and Silke gave him nine grandchildren.

German-American protestant theologian, Dieter Georgi died suddenly on March 1, 2005 in Frankfurt am Main. The actual cause of his death hasn’t been made public but it does appear he may have died of natural causes.
The renowned theologian and professor died just before he and he theologian wife celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. His death left the family devasted but also proud of what he achieved during his time on earth.
He left behind his wife, Barbara Georgi and their five children and grandchildren.
He was buried on Friday, March 11, 2005, ten days after he died. His funeral and burial services were held at the Frankfurt Main Cememtary, Germany.
