Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s Biography
Giovanni Di Lorenzo Cavaliere OMRI, commonly known as Giovanni Di Lorenzo, was born on August 4, 1993, in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, Italy.
He is a professional footballer from Italy who now plays as a right-back for Serie A side Napoli, where he also serves as captain. Di Lorenzo has also played for the senior national squad of Italy.
Di Lorenzo began his football career with the Reggina youth system in 2009. On May 29, 2011, he made his professional debut for the senior team against Sassuolo in a Serie B match. During the 2012-2013 season, he was loaned to Lega Pro Prima Divisione side Cuneo, where he impressed with his performances.
Di Lorenzo played for Matera from 2015 to 2017, appearing in 58 games and scoring three goals. Empoli signed him in August 2017. He contributed to the team’s promotion to Serie A, where he made his debut in August 2018. Di Lorenzo scored his first goal in Serie A against Cagliari.
Di Lorenzo joined Napoli on June 7, 2019, for a fee of €8 million. In his first year at the club, he established himself as a significant player, helping Napoli defeat Juventus in the Coppa Italia Final. Napoli also advanced to the Round of 16 in the Champions League, with Di Lorenzo contributing two assists and appearing in all four games.
In his second year, he helped the team reach the Europa League Round of 32; however, they were upset by Granada. Napoli finished fifth in the league, with Di Lorenzo scoring seven goals in the league and domestic cup competitions.
Di Lorenzo was linked with a move to Manchester United in July 2020. However, he chose to extend his contract with Napoli for another five years, committing to the club until 2026.
Di Lorenzo was chosen as Napoli’s new captain on July 14, 2022, following the departures of Lorenzo Insigne and Kalidou Koulibaly. He scored his first Champions League goal in a 6-1 away win over Ajax on October 4.
Di Lorenzo has represented Italy at the U20 and U21 junior levels on the international stage. On August 14, 2013, he made his debut for the Italy U21 national team in a friendly against Slovakia.
On October 15, 2019, he made his senior international debut against Liechtenstein in a UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying match, which Italy won 5-0. Di Lorenzo was also named to Italy’s team for UEFA Euro 2020, where he played a significant role in the country’s success.
He scored his first goal for the Italy senior national team in a 5-0 win against Lithuania in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification on September 8, 2021.
Di Lorenzo married Clarissa Franchi on May 25, 2022, off the pitch. Azzura and Carolina are the couple’s two daughters.
