Dame Rosemary “Rosie” Anne Horton was a renowned New Zealand philanthropist born on March 25, 1940 in Christchurch, New Zealand. She was however raised by her parents, Ellis Moon and Olga in Ashburton.
Part of the reasons why she dedicated her life to helping millions of people people was that, her own mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and eventually died of it in February 1963. At the time of her mother’s death, she was barely 23 years old.
Years later, Horton then became a founding chair of the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. But long before that, she was a librarian at UEB in Auckland. In addition to being a founding chair of the the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation, Horton was also part of the original trustees of the Starship Foundation.
She was also involved in the SPCA, the Salvation Army and was a great contributor to Women’s Refuge.
For her good works over the years, Horton is a recipient of a number of honors and rewards. Horton was made a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2011 Queen’s Birthday Honours. It came 7 years after she was appointed a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order in the 2004 Queen’s Birthday Honours. She received the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal in 1990 and also received a Mayor’s Living Legend Award in 2008.
Until her death, Horton was married to Michael Horton with whom she established the Michael and Fake Rosie Horton Prize at the University of Auckland.
