German Ambassador Christian Hellbach was born in Mexico City on July 20, 1959. Since 2022, he has led the Federal Republic of Germany’s embassy in Zagreb while acting as its ambassador to Croatia.
Hellbach’s academic career started in 1979 when he graduated from the German School in Bogotรก. After that, he pursued a legal degree, finishing his studies in 1985 by passing the second state legal examination.
After this, he obtained his PhD in jurisprudence in 1989 while working as a research assistant at the University of Konstanz from 1985 to 1989. The social role of the constitutional guarantee of corporate ownership was the main topic of his dissertation.
Hellbach’s professional career began in 1990 when he worked as a consultant for the Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety.
He then started serving as a candidate for the higher foreign service, holding several assignments at the Foreign Office headquarters and the Embassy in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
In addition, he held positions in the Serbian Embassy in Belgrade and the Permanent Mission to the International Organisations in Geneva. Hellbach also held positions as ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina and department head at the Foreign Office.
He became ambassador to Chile in 2019 and arrived in Croatia in 2022 to take up his current post.
