Alexei Navalny was born on June 4, 1976, and he is a Russian opposition leader, lawyer, and anti-corruption activist. Alexei Navalny was born to a father who hailed from Zalissia, a former village near the Belarusian border. He grew up in Obninsk, about 100 kilometres (62 mi) southwest of Moscow.
Alexei Navalny spent his childhood days with his grandmother in Ukraine. Anatoly Navalny and Lyudmila Navalnay are the parents of Alexei Navalny. They owned a basket-weaving factory which was set up in 1994 in the village of Kobyakovo, Vologda Oblast.
Concerning education, he attended Kalininets secondary school (level 3 according to the ISCED) and graduated Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia in 1998 with a law degree. Alexei Navalny also studied d securities and exchanges at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, graduating in 2001. He was also at the Yale World Fellows program at Yale University in 2010 due to a scholarship.
Over the years, he has been involved and has led anti-government demonstrations. He has also run for office to advocate reforms against corruption in Russia and against President Vladimir Putin and his government. It must be noted that Alexei Navalny was a Russian Opposition Coordination Council member and he is known to be the leader of the Russia of the Future party and founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK).
Amnesty International recognizes him as a prisoner of conscience. Due to his work on human rights, he received the Sakharov Prize. Alexei Navalny had over six million YouTube subscribers as of 2021 and he has published material about corruption in Russia.
Even though he received a sentence for embezzlement in July 2013, he still ran in the 2013 Moscow mayoral election. He placed second and lost to incumbent mayor Sergey Sobyanin. Alexei Navalny got hospitalized in August 2020 after he had been with a Novichok nerve agent.
Later on, he accused Putin for poisoning him. Alexei Navalny was in March 2022 sentenced to nine years in prison for embezzlement and contempt of court in a new trial. He was also sentenced to an additional 19 years in prison on extremism charges in August 2023.
Alexei Navalny went missing from his current prison in December 2023 and he is yet to be found.
Meet Alexei Navalny’s Children
Alexei Navalny has two children. They are Dasha, currently an undergraduate student at Stanford University, and son Zakhar. The mother of the children are Yulia Navalnaya; wife of Alexei Navalny. Alexei Navalny is currently a member of the Russian Orthodox Church but used to be an atheist.
