Alexander Moissi, born Aleksandër Moisiu was a luminary of the European stage, celebrated for his acting prowess.  Moissi’s formative years included an international upbringing in Trieste, Durrës, and Graz.

Biography

Alexander Moissi was born on April 2, 1879, in Trieste. At the age of 20, he settled in Vienna with his mother and sisters. Even though Moissi had some early difficulties, his perseverance got him into Vienna’s esteemed Burgtheater. His early attempts to enroll in acting school were turned down because of his thick Italian accent. Relentlessly, he embraced silent parts. Famous Austrian actor Josef Kainz was drawn to him because of his powerful performance in Molière’s “Tartuffe” in the 1899–1800 season.

Kainz gave Moissi encouragement, and her career as a stage virtuoso began. He began performing with the Berlin ensemble of the Deutsches Theater in 1903, where he was trained by renowned director Max Reinhardt. His portrayal of Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice,” where he accentuated his melodic speech under Reinhardt’s direction, was a pivotal moment that launched him to fame.

Moissi’s international acclaim grew with performances in Russia, including a lauded interpretation of Sophocles’ “Oedipus.” Touring Europe and the Americas, he achieved unparalleled success in his role as Fedya in Tolstoy’s “The Living Corpse,” performed over 1400 times.

In 1914, Moissi, having acquired German citizenship, volunteered for World War I. During the German Revolution of 1918–19, he aligned himself with the Marxist Spartacus League. His commitment to both art and socio-political causes reflected a multifaceted persona.

Among the many well-known parts in Moissi’s repertory were Hamlet, Oedipus, Faust, and several more. His singing ability and emotional depth were praised in his performances. He also graced the stages of the Theater in der Josefstadt and the Vienna Volkstheater in addition to the Deutsches Theater.

Though he was mostly a theater actor, Moissi made significant contributions to film, appearing in eleven films between 1910 and 1935. His silent cinema parts, like those in “The Student of Prague” (1913), demonstrated his capacity to emote subtly and with depth.
