Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter and art theorist. He was born on December 4, 1866 in Moscow, Russia. His parents were Lidia Ticheeva and Vasily Silvestrovich Kandinsky, a tea merchant.
Wassily Kandinsky is considered one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art and he spent his childhood days in Odesa. With regard to education, Wassily Kandinsky attended and graduated from Odesa Art School.
He furthered his education at the University of Moscow. He read Law and Economics. He was offered a professorship (chair of Roman Law) at the University of Dorpat (today Tartu, Estonia) and at age 30, he started painting studies.
He also had studies at Anton Ažbe’s private school and then at the Academy of Fine Arts when he was in Munich in 1896. After World War I, he made his return to Moscow and later became an insider in the cultural administration of Anatoly Lunacharsky.
He helped Anatoly Lunacharsky in the establishment of the Museum of the Culture of Painting. Wassily Kandinsky relocated to Germany in 1920 and he taught at the Bauhaus School of art and Architecture from 1922 till it was closed down in 1933. He became a French citizen after moving to France.
Wassily Kandinsky Cause of Death
Wassily Kandinsky was reported in 1944. He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine three days before his 78th birthday. The cause of his death was cerebrovascular disease. He was also a lecturer on Jurisprudence at the University of Moscow.
It must be noted that between 1906 and 1908, he finally settled in the small Bavarian town of Murnau. This was after he had traveled across Europe. Wassily Kandinsky met Nina Nikolaevna Andreevskaya and they got married on February 11, 1917.
At that time Nikolaevna Andreevskaya was just about 17 or 18 years old and he was 50 years old. They gave birth to a son called Lodya but he died in June 1920.
Early life
When Wassily Kandinsky was twenty years old, he became a member of an ethnographic research group. The group traveled to the Vologda region north of Moscow.
Later, he likened painting to composing music in the manner for which he would become noted. The Russian-French philosopher Alexandre Kojève who lived between 1902 and 1968 was the nephew of Wassily Kandinsky.
His grandson was musicology professor and writer Aleksey Ivanovich Kandinsky (1918–2000), whose career was both focused on and centered in Russia.
