Jürgen Drews Biography

Jürgen Ludwig Drews, born on April 2, 1945, is a renowned German Schlager singer. Known for his iconic voice and energetic performances, he has left an indelible mark on the music industry.

Drews was born near Berlin in Nauen and raised in Schleswig. His father’s family has a history dating back to the Huguenots, but they have lived in Brandenburg for two generations.

His mother, on the other hand, was the daughter of the opera singer and director Georg Buttlar. Drews, despite his familial history, had a different plan.

Drews initially studied medicine at the University of Kiel after finishing his education. However, his passion for music eventually overtook him, and he dropped out of medical school to pursue a career as a musician.

Drews showed extraordinary talent even at a young age, winning the award for Best Banjo Player of Schleswig-Holstein at the age of 15 while performing in a jazz band named the Schnirpels. During his high school years, he was also a member of the band “The Monkeys.”

Drews became a solo guitarist for the Kiel-based psychedelic rock band “Chimes of Freedom” in 1967. The band’s name was later changed to “Die Anderen” (The Others) by their manager. Drews made his acting debut in the German film comedy “Zur Hölle mit den Paukern” the same year, playing a student and musician.

Drews rose to prominence after joining the 1970s pop ensemble “Les Humphries Singers,” where he demonstrated his vocal ability. However, it was his solo career that propelled him to fame.

In 1976, he had a number-one success in Germany with his version of the Bellamy Brothers’ “Let Your Love Flow,” titled “Ein Bett im Kornfeld” (A Bed in the Cornfield).

Drews’s standing as a key person in the music industry was cemented by the song’s success.

Drews was successful not just in Germany, but also in the United States. In January 1981, he scored a minor hit with his track “Don’t Want No-Body” on the Billboard Hot 100, credited as J.D. Drews.

The record reached number 79 on the Billboard Hot 100. Interestingly, Toni Basil released the same song as a single under the title “Nobody.”

Drew has been married twice in his personal life. From 1981 to 1985, he was married to German actress and model Corinna Drews (née Gillwald), with whom he had a son.

He has been married to German actress and model Ramona Drews (née Mittendorf) since 1995, and the couple has a daughter named Joelina Drews.

Drews currently lives in Dülmen-Rorup, Germany, but also spends time in Mallorca, where he operates a restaurant called “König von Mallorca – Kultbistro.”

Drews has received various accolades and recognitions for his contributions to music over the years. He has won several Bravo Otto awards, including three Silvers in 1976, 1977, and 1978.

He also received the Goldene Stimmgabel Award in 1981 and the Silver Löwe von Radio Luxemburg Award in 1976. Drews, in addition to his tremendous music career, has dabbled in acting, appearing in a number of films and television series.

He has appeared in films such as “Ein Kaktus ist kein Lutschbonbon” (1981), “Ballermann 6” (1997), and “Der Prinz von Wanne-Eickel” (2007). He’s also appeared in TV shows like “Die Drews – eine furchtbar nette Familie” and “Cash Crash.”

Drews has had various health issues despite his accomplishments. He has been suffering polyneuropathy, a nerve ailment that has hampered his ability to perform. He declared his decision to reduce his musical activity owing to this disease in May 2022.
