Andreas Gabalier’s Biography

Andreas Gabalier is an Austrian folk and rock singer, known for his unique blend of traditional Alpine music and modern rock elements.

He is the second oldest of four children and was born on November 21, 1984, near Friesach, Austria.

Gabalier was raised in Graz, where he developed an early interest in music. His ancestors come from a soldier who came to Austria during Napoleon Bonaparte’s Italian campaign and opted to stay.

Despite his family’s tragedies, including his father’s suicide in 2006 and the death of his younger sister in 2008, Gabalier has channelled his emotions into his music.

Gabalier began studying law in Graz after graduating from a commercial high school. However, his love of music quickly overtook him, and he began writing and composing his own songs.

He began recording in a hobby studio and eventually drew the notice of the ORF Landesstudio Steiermark, where he premiered two of his songs in the summer of 2008.

Gabalier immediately achieved recognition in Austria and beyond due to his distinct sound and enthusiastic performances. “Da komm ich her,” his debut album, was published in 2009 and peaked at number four on the Austrian charts. The album was certified platinum five times in Austria and gold in Germany.

Gabalier’s later albums, including “Herzwerk,” “Volks-Rock’n’Roller,” and “Home Sweet Home,” charted in Austria and were certified multi-platinum. His 2015 album, “Mountain Man,” debuted at number one in Austria and Germany, cementing his place as one of Austria’s leading musicians of his time.

Gabalier has issued live albums as well as studio albums, including “Volks-Rock’n’Roller Live” and “Mountain Man – Live aus Berlin.” He has won various music prizes, including the Echo Award for “Best Folk Music Album” in 2013 and the Amadeus Austrian Music Award for “Best Live Act” in 2016.

Gabalier’s music has reached audiences far beyond Austria, with many of his songs addressing universal themes such as love, sorrow, and hope. His famous tunes, such as “Amoi seg’ ma uns wieder,” “I sing a Liad für di,” and “Hulapalu,” have become anthems in the Austrian music industry.

Gabalier has been a notable character in Austrian television in addition to his music career. He was a judge on “Die Große Chance” and had his own TV show, “Andreas Gabalier – Das Heimspiel.”
