Gunther Emmerlich’s Biography
Gunther Emmerlich, born on September 18th, 1944, is a renowned German opera singer, jazz performer, banjo player, and show presenter.
Emmerlich, who was born in Eisenberg, a tiny town in Germany, suffered severe loss at an early age when his father never returned from the war and his mother died of multiple sclerosis when he was only eleven years old.
He was nevertheless lucky to be nurtured by his elder brother and sister.
Emmerlich initially pursued a profession in civil engineering, primarily demolition, after finishing his education. His love of music, however, led him to study opera singing at the Franz Liszt Academy in Weimar from 1967 to 1972.
From 1972 to 1992, he was a permanent member of the Dresden State Opera Company after finishing his studies. His performance of Osmin in Seraglio was one of his most prominent roles at the time.
He was also praised for his roles as Falstaff in The Merry Wives of Windsor, Sarastro in Magic Flute, Milkman Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, Eliza’s father in My Fair Lady, and Sallah Shabati in Ephraim Kishon’s musical of the same name.
During the 1980s, Emmerlich worked as a television presenter in the German Democratic Republic. He presented the television cabaret show Showkolade from 1987 to 1990.
Emmerlich became the host of Zauberhafte Heimat, a popular show incorporating popular music, after Germany’s reunification. His frequent television appearances made him a popular figure on both sides of the pre-1990 internal border.
Emmerlich’s excellent showbiz career has continued in subsequent years. Since 2004, he has hosted the Folk Music Prizes gala, also known as the “Krone der Volksmusik.” He also had the honour of hosting the famous Dresden Opera Ball from 2006 to 2015.
He is also a part of the “Semper House Band,” a jazz ensemble made up of Dresden State Opera orchestra members.
Gunther Emmerlich is married to actress Anne-Kathrein Emmerlich, and the couple has two recorded children. However, the couple was rumoured to have divorced in 2014. Emmerlich also has a son from a previous marriage.
Emmerlich has received numerous prizes and honours throughout his career. He got the prestigious Bambi Award in 1990 and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1997.
