Giuseppe Valditara’s Biography

Giuseppe Valditara, born on January 12, 1961, in Milan, Italy, is an Italian politician and jurist. He currently serves as the Minister of Education and Merit in the Meloni government, a position he assumed on October 22, 2022.

Valditara’s academic career began with a law degree from the University of Milan. He subsequently went on to become a professor of Roman law and ancient rights at the University of Turin’s Department of Law.

His book, “Studi sul magister populi: From the Rex’s military auxiliaries to the first republican magistrates,” won the International Prize for the History of Political and Legal Institutions in 1992, awarded by the Constitutional Court’s presidency.

Valditara was the scientific director of Studi juridici europea, a legal journal published by the European University of Rome. He also served as the dean of the Law degree programme at the same university.

Valditara began his political career as a member of the National Alliance party. He joined the PdL (People of Freedom) party after the National Alliance was dissolved. He later joined the Future and Freedom Party before joining the League party.

In the year 2000, he was appointed as the education councillor for the province of Milan.

Valditara was elected senator of the republic in 2001 and re-elected in the 15th and 16th legislatures.

He was a key figure in the Senate during the formulation of the Gelmini reform, serving as a speaker and contributing to the reform’s drafting.

During the tenure of Minister Marco Bussetti, Valditara led the Ministry of Education, University, and Research’s (MIUR) “Higher Education and Research” department from 2018 to 2019.

In September 2022, he became a political counsellor to the League’s leader, Matteo Salvini.

Valditara stood for political office with the League party on September 25, 2022, but was defeated.
