Freddie Mercury’s Biography
Freddie Mercury, born Farrokh Bulsara on September 5, 1946, was a British singer and songwriter who achieved legendary status as the lead vocalist and pianist of the rock band Queen.
Mercury left an indelible influence on the world of rock music with his flashy theatrical presence and remarkable vocal range.
Mercury was born to Parsi-Indian parents in Zanzibar. He grew up in India and attended English boarding schools before returning to Zanzibar after completing secondary school.
His family left the Zanzibar Revolution in 1964 and relocated to Middlesex, England. Mercury, guitarist Brian May, and drummer Roger Taylor created Queen in England in 1970.
He was the band’s major songwriter, writing several of their biggest singles, including “Killer Queen,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Somebody to Love,” and “We Are the Champions.”
Mercury’s powerful stage presence and theatrical manner influenced the artistic direction of the Queen.
Mercury had a successful solo career in addition to his work with Queen. He had two solo albums, “Mr. Bad Guy” in 1985 and “Barcelona” in 1988. Although his solo effort was not as commercially successful as Queen’s albums, three of his singles charted in the UK Top 10.
Mercury was tragically diagnosed with AIDS in 1987. Despite his failing health, he continued to record with Queen and was included on their final album, “Made in Heaven,” in 1995.
On November 24, 1991, at the age of 45, he died of AIDS-related complications, barely one day after publicly confirming his diagnosis.
The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert was organised in his honour at Wembley Stadium in 1992 to raise awareness about AIDS.
Even during his lifetime, Mercury’s remarkable ability and contributions to music were recognised.
In 2001, he and Queen were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2003, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Queen was admitted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2004, and they got the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection the following year.
Mercury got the same award on his own in 1992. He was ranked 58th in the BBC’s poll of the 100 Greatest Britons in 2002.
