Olaf Scholz’s Biography

Olaf Scholz is a German politician who has been serving as the chancellor of Germany since December 8, 2021.

He is a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and has a long political career.

Scholz was born in Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, on June 14, 1958, and grew up in Hamburg’s Rahlstedt area. He hails from a family with ties to the textile industry.

He went to Bekassinenau Elementary School before moving on to Großlohering elementary school. He attended the University of Hamburg after graduating from high school in 1977.

Scholz began his legal career as a labour and employment lawyer. He joined the SPD in the 1970s and was elected to the Bundestag in 1998, representing the Hamburg-Altona seat.

He served on the Labour and Social Affairs Committee and was the chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in the Bundestag’s visa inquiry committee.

Scholz was elected Senator for the Interior of Hamburg in the Senate chaired by Mayor Ortwin Runde in 2001. He retained this role until his party was defeated in the Hamburg state election in October 2001.

He was chosen SPD General Secretary in 2002, and he worked closely with then-Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. He was also the SPD Bundestag Group’s First Parliamentary Secretary and the Social Democratic Party’s Chief Whip.

Scholz was appointed Federal Minister for Labour and Social Affairs in the first Merkel government in 2007, succeeding Franz Müntefering. Scholz was elected as the SPD’s Deputy Leader following the 2009 federal election, when the SPD quit the government.

He stood as the SPD’s lead candidate in the Hamburg state election in 2011 and was elected First Mayor of Hamburg, a position he held until 2018.

Scholz was named Federal Minister of Finance and Vice Chancellor of Germany in the fourth Merkel cabinet in 2018. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he was instrumental in developing financial rescue measures for the country’s economy.

He also favoured a financial transaction tax and a global minimum corporation tax rate.

Scholz was named as the SPD’s candidate for Chancellor of Germany in the 2021 federal election. Scholz formed a coalition administration with the Green Party and the Free Democratic Party after the SPD secured a majority of seats in the Bundestag.

He was elected and inaugurated as Chancellor of Germany on December 8, 2021, following Angela Merkel.

Scholz oversaw Germany’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 during his tenure as Chancellor. He enacted measures such as boosting the defence budget, arming Ukraine, and cancelling the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.
