Viktor Elbling: Biography And Wiki
German diplomat Viktor Elbling was born in Karachi on April 4, 1959. Since 2023, he has served as the Federal Republic of Germany’s ambassador to Poland.
Prior to this, he served as the Federal Republic of Germany’s ambassador to Mexico from 2014 to 2018 and to Italy from 2018 to 2023.
Elbling, whose mother is Italian, attended the German School in Milan and Forlรฌ, Emilia-Romagna, for a portion of his education.
He started studying law at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universitรคt Bonn in 1978 after graduating from the German School in Bilbao, and he finished his studies there in 1984 by passing the first state examination in law.
Apart from his legal internship, he also passed the second state test in law in 1987 and finished postgraduate studies in political science and Romance languages between 1984 and 1987.
Elbling started the higher foreign service preparing program in 1988. After completing it, he worked as a policy advisor at the South Korean embassy from 1990 to 1993, after first serving at the Foreign Office headquarters in Bonn from 1989 to 1990.
Subsequently, he held multiple positions in the Foreign Office, starting as a consultant in the Minister’s Office and ultimately serving as Federal Minister Klaus Kinkel’s personal advisor until 1998.
From 1998 to 1999, he was Federal Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer’s deputy head of the Minister’s Office.
After that, Elbling headed the economic section of the embassy in Spain from 1999 to 2003.
Following that, he returned to the Foreign Office, where from 2003 to 2006 he headed the department in charge of international economic and financial policy.
From 2010 to 2014, he headed the Foreign Office’s Department for Economics and Sustainable Development. From 2006 to 2010, he served as the Commissioner for Globalization, Energy, and Energy and Climate Policy.
As Edmund Duckwitz retired in August 2014, Elbling assumed the position of Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Mexico.
The ambassadorship in Rome was handed over from Susanne Wasum-Rainer to Elbling in September 2018.
From summer 2023 to the present, Elbling has served as the Federal Republic of Germany’s ambassador to Poland.
