Vera F. Birkenbihl’s Biography
Vera Felicitas Birkenbihl was a renowned German management trainer and non-fiction author.
She was born on April 26, 1946, in Munich, and her life was distinguished by her passion to learning and teaching. Birkenbihl died on December 3, 2011, at the age of 65, in Osterholz-Scharmbeck.
Vera Birkenbihl was raised in a family influenced by her father, Michael Birkenbihl, a personal trainer and management consultant. However, due to family disputes, she opted to drop out of high school. She later studied psychology and journalism in order to choose a different path.
Birkenbihl began working on novel learning strategies in 1969. In 1970, her love for teaching drove her to conduct her first lectures and seminars in the United States. She returned to Germany in 1972 and worked as a freelance trainer and author.
She lived in her hometown of Odelzhausen for a long period, in her parents’ house. She eventually relocated to Osterholz-Scharmbeck. Birkenbihl disclosed that she has Asperger’s condition, which sheds light on her unusual perspective and approach to learning.
Birkenbihl was diagnosed with oesophagal cancer in the spring of 2011 and underwent surgery. Unfortunately, she died later that year from a pulmonary embolism. She was laid to rest in the Hambergen cemetery, a nearby town.
Birkenbihl had a huge impact on the subject of education. She became well-known in the mid-1980s for her self-developed language-learning approach known as the Birkenbihl method.
She studied brain-friendly learning and teaching, analytical and creative thinking, personality development, numerology, and pragmatic esotericism through seminars and publications. Thorwald Dethlefsen impacted her esoteric interests, which she incorporated into her work.
Vera F. Birkenbihl launched a publishing business and the Institute for Brain-Friendly Work in 1973, in addition to her efforts as a thought leader.
She also starred on other television shows, including her own “Kopfspiele,” which aired in 2004. In 1999, she was recognised as an expert on BR-alpha’s “Alpha – Views for the Third Millennium” series.
Birkenbihl’s influence lasted beyond her lifetime. By 2000, she had sold two million books, and her novels continued to sell well in Germany even a decade after her death.
Her primary focus was on playful information transfer and learning methodologies for both learners and teachers. Her creation of the ABC list method was one of her most noteworthy accomplishments.
Birkenbihl has written for prestigious journals such as the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the Harvard Business Manager, and Hirn&Geist.
In the late 1990s, Birkenbihl’s learning principles gained popularity as brain-friendly approaches, emphasising a natural and holistic learning experience that avoided rote memorization.
Her approach was divided into four steps: decoding, active listening, passive listening, and speaking, reading, and writing. These techniques would help learners improve their language comprehension while also creating a sense of the language itself.
During her lectures, Birkenbihl also touched on esoteric issues, stating her idea that current physics corresponds with an esoteric worldview.
She interpreted quantum physics findings from a layperson’s perspective, connecting them to paranormal experiences. She also acknowledged her own clairvoyant powers and told anecdotes about her experiences in that domain.
