German stage and movie actress Traute Carlsen was renowned for her sophisticated on-screen and off-screen personas. After entering the Deutsches Theater’s acting school in Berlin, she started her acting career in 1907.
After making her stage debut at the Hof-und National theatre in Mannheim, Carlsen went on to play in several German theatres, such as the Kleines Theatre in Berlin and the Komรถdienhaus in Frankfurt am Main.
Carlsen also dabbled with acting, making appearances in melodramas for the studios of Imperator and Duskes films. She did, however, turn her attention to theatre once World War I ended and joined Vienna’s esteemed Burgtheater. Carlsen relocated to Switzerland in 1927 and settled there permanently.
She kept performing on stage, mostly at Zurich’s Schauspielhaus.
When the Nazis took control in 1933, Carlsen decided to stay in Switzerland because of her Jewish ancestry. In addition to working for Radio Bern and Swiss television, she made appearances in Swiss films.
Carlsen first married actor Karl Forest, then director Karlheinz Martin. She received the esteemed Hans-Reinhart-Ring prize in 1959 in recognition of her achievements in the Swiss theatre industry.
