Biography
Theodor Loos was born on May 18, 1883. Loos originally followed a different route despite coming from a family with a history in handicrafts. Following his early secondary school graduation, he worked for three years in Leipzig for an export company that specialized in musical instruments. He then relocated to Berlin to work as an art dealer for his uncle. Even with this career diversion, Loos was drawn to the theater and decided to pursue acting as a vocation.
Loos’s career as an actor began with a series of theater engagements that brought him to Leipzig, Danzig, and Frankfurt am Main. But he made his mark on the theater world in Berlin, where he performed at several venues and captivated audiences from 1912 until 1945. His performances in Henrik Ibsen’s “Peer Gynt,” which spanned more than 400 performances in the 1930s, demonstrated his flexibility and dedication to traditional theater.
In addition to his success in theaters, Loos ventured into the film industry, where he made appearances in more than 170 feature films, beginning with silent pictures. His cinematic trajectory is closely linked to the films of renowned director Fritz Lang. The partnership between Loos and Lang turned into a defining feature of German film and greatly influenced the genre at the time.
As a member of the Reichsfilmkammer President’s Advisory Council (Präsidialrat), Loos was active in the film industry throughout the difficult Third Reich era.
After the Second World War ended, Loos went back to his theater origins. After the war, he resumed his theatrical activities in August 1949 and was a cherished member of the Staatstheater Stuttgart. During this time, he returned to his real love, theater, where his abilities never failed to wow crowds.
Theodor August Konrad Loos passed away on June 27, 1954. His life story weaves through the fabric of German theater and cinema.
