She was born to Hungarian noblewoman Judith von Rohonczy and Austrian orchestra leader Carl Melles. The daughter of actress Ila Lóth, her mother was also an actress.
Sunnyi Melles wed Prince Peter of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn in 1993. Prince Peter is the photographer-parent Marianne, Princess zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn.
They have two children: Leonille Elisabeth Judith Maria Anna, Princess zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn, who was born in 1996, and Constantin Victor Ludwig, Prince zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn, who was born in 1994.
