Rolf Stommelen’s Biography
Rolf Johann Stommelen was a German racer who was born in Siegen and reached great heights. Stommelen, who was born on July 11, 1943, has professional success in both Formula One and endurance sports car racing.
Stommelen finished on the podium once in 63 Formula One World Championship Grands Prix, earning 14 championship points overall. He also competed in many Formula One races that were not championship contests. But endurance sports car racing was where his real skill and success were found.
Known as one of the greatest drivers of endurance sports cars of the 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s, Stommelen won several important races. He drove a Porsche 910 to victory at the Targa Florio in 1967 and went on to win four times at the 24 Hours of Daytona: in 1968, 1978, 1980, and 1982.
Among Stommelen’s other career highlights were his 1969 24 Hours of Le Mans pole position in a Porsche 917 and his 1970s Formula One racing career.
Five fans lost their lives in a tragic event that occurred in 1975 at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, which took place in Stommelen.
Following his recuperation, he resumed his career in sports car racing, emerging victorious for Alfa Romeo and adding three more wins at the 24 Hours of Daytona.
In the 1976 Porsche 936 race at the Nรผrburgring, Stommelen showed off his extraordinary talent and tenacity by purposefully allowing Renaults to pass him before taking the lead back.
In 1978, he maintained his impressive performance in the Porsche 935 “Moby Dick” and came just short of victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979.
On April 24, 1983, Stommelen tragically lost his life in an accident that occurred during the Los Angeles Times Grand Prix. Competing in a Porsche 935, a technical malfunction caused the vehicle to become uncontrolled at high speeds, resulting in a deadly collision.
